Ospreys Rugby honours its founding Chairman – a former Swansea second row, All Whites Chairman and investor whose service to rugby in Swansea spans almost six decades.
Ospreys Rugby is delighted to announce today that Mike James, the region's founding Chairman and long-standing benefactor, has been appointed President of Ospreys Rugby. The appointment, made by the Ospreys Board, recognises a lifetime of loyalty – first to the All Whites and then to the professional game in the Ospreys region – as a player at St Helen's, as a committee man and Chairman of Swansea RFC, and latterly as the founding Chairman and benefactor of the Ospreys.
As Chairman of Swansea RFC in the professional era, Mike guided the club through one of the most turbulent periods in Welsh rugby. When Swansea and Neath came together in 2003 to form the Ospreys, he became the new region's founding Chairman and, with his business partner Robert Davies, its principal benefactor and investor of both time and funds. Under his chairmanship the Ospreys became the most successful Welsh side of the regional era, winning four Celtic League and Pro12 titles and, in 2006, becoming the first Welsh region to beat a major touring side when they defeated Australia 24-16.
The record Mike helped to build speaks for itself. Since 2008 the Ospreys have provided 181 Six Nations selections for Wales (Scarlets 160, Cardiff 154, Dragons 59) and 47 Rugby World Cup selections – the most of any region. The Ospreys have supplied 22 British & Irish Lions selections and 15 individual Lions, more than any other region and the only Welsh club represented on all six tours since 2005, and seven Wales captains, joint first with Cardiff, including the two longest-serving since 2003.
James Davies-Yandle, Chairman and Chief Executive of Y11 Sport & Media, owners of the Ospreys, said: "Mike James is Swansea rugby. He pulled on the white jersey at St Helen's, he sat on the committee when the WRU Cup came home in 1978, he chaired the club through the hardest years of the professional era and then he put his own money and his reputation on the line to build the Ospreys into the most successful region Wales has ever produced. Very few people have given so much, for so long, and asked for so little in return.
"Whenever the Ospreys have needed someone to stand up for the region, Mike has done it, at real personal cost and with total commitment. When the Y11 team needed wise counsel on arriving in Swansea, he gave it freely. His loyalty to the All Whites and to the region is absolute, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the Presidency of the Ospreys. On behalf of everyone at Y11 and the Ospreys, congratulations, Mike."
Roger Blyth, Director of the Ospreys, former Wales full-back and Swansea RFC's second-highest all-time points scorer, said: "I played alongside Mike at St Helen's and I have worked alongside him ever since, so I can say with some authority that there has never been a more committed Swansea man. Mike has been a team-mate, a committee man and a Chairman, and with Rob Davies he invested millions of pounds. In every one of those roles, the club and the region came first. He has been closely involved in shaping the new St Helen's, chairing an advisory group, and his professional expertise and influence have driven the work and the outcome we see at St Helen's today. His enthusiasm is infectious, he is direct, and he is a leader who always sees the humour in life – especially under pressure.
"Mike understands what the All Whites and the Ospreys mean to this great city of Swansea. He has carried the history of Swansea RFC with him into everything he has done for the Ospreys. The Presidency is the club's and the region's highest honour, and it has gone to the right man."
Mike James, President of Ospreys Rugby, said: "Watching the club come back to play at St Helen's, with the city coming together behind it, has rejuvenated everyone. My contribution is a small part of that, alongside the dedicated work of many others, which is extremely gratifying. From my first game for the All Whites, to the Ospreys and, today, the return to St Helen's, this club has figured hugely in my life and that of my family. I thank my wife Cynthia for her support and her great patience, together with my sons and their wives, my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren.
"The success of the owners and the current group of management, coaches and players makes me very proud, as do the Board, our advisers, our employees and our supporters.
"It is an honour to be made President in this modern era, and to work alongside James Davies-Yandle. Helping Y11 to shape the future has been very satisfying, and I thank them and everyone for this honour."
Rygbi'r Gweilch yn anrhydeddu ei Gadeirydd sefydlu – cyn-ail reng Abertawe, Cadeirydd y Crysau Gwynion a buddsoddwr y mae ei wasanaeth i rygbi yn Abertawe yn ymestyn dros bron i chwe degawd
Mae Rygbi'r Gweilch yn falch iawn o gyhoeddi heddiw bod Mike James, Cadeirydd sefydlu'r rhanbarth a'i noddwr hirsefydlog, wedi'i benodi'n Llywydd Rygbi'r Gweilch. Mae'r penodiad, a wnaed gan Y 11 a Fwrdd y Gweilch, yn cydnabod oes o deyrngarwch – i'r Crysau Gwynion yn gyntaf, ac yna i'r gêm broffesiynol yn rhanbarth y Gweilch – fel chwaraewr yn Sain Helen, fel aelod o'r pwyllgor a Chadeirydd Clwb Rygbi Abertawe, ac yn ddiweddarach fel Cadeirydd sefydlu a noddwr y Gweilch.
Fel Cadeirydd Clwb Rygbi Abertawe yn yr oes broffesiynol, arweiniodd Mike y clwb drwy un o'r cyfnodau mwyaf cythryblus yn hanes rygbi Cymru. Pan ddaeth Abertawe a Chastell-nedd ynghyd yn 2003 i ffurfio'r Gweilch, daeth yn Gadeirydd sefydlu'r rhanbarth newydd ac, ynghyd â'i bartner busnes Robert Davies, yn brif noddwr a buddsoddwr iddo, o ran amser ac arian fel ei gilydd. O dan ei gadeiryddiaeth daeth y Gweilch yn dîm mwyaf llwyddiannus Cymru yn yr oes ranbarthol, gan ennill pedwar teitl Cynghrair y Celtiaid a'r Pro12 a, thrwy guro Awstralia 24-16 yn 2006, dod y rhanbarth cyntaf o Gymru i drechu un o'r prif dimau teithiol.
Mae'r record y bu Mike yn helpu i'w hadeiladu yn siarad drosti ei hun. Ers 2008 mae'r Gweilch wedi darparu 181 o ddewisiadau i Gymru yn y Chwe Gwlad (Scarlets 160, Caerdydd 154, Dreigiau 59) a 47 o ddewisiadau i Gwpan Rygbi'r Byd – y mwyaf o blith unrhyw ranbarth. Mae'r Gweilch wedi cyflenwi 22 o ddewisiadau i'r Llewod Prydeinig ac Iwerddon a 15 o Lewod unigol, yn fwy nag unrhyw ranbarth arall a'r unig glwb o Gymru i gael ei gynrychioli ar bob un o'r chwe thaith ers 2005, ynghyd â saith capten Cymru, yn gyfartal gyntaf â Chaerdydd, gan gynnwys y ddau sydd wedi gwasanaethu hiraf ers 2003.
Dywedodd James Davies-Yandle, Cadeirydd a Phrif Weithredwr Y11 Sport & Media, perchnogion y Gweilch: "Mike James yw rygbi Abertawe. Gwisgodd y crys gwyn yn Sain Helen, eisteddodd ar y pwyllgor pan ddaeth Cwpan Undeb Rygbi Cymru adref yn 1978, cadeiriodd y clwb drwy flynyddoedd caletaf yr oes broffesiynol, ac yna rhoddodd ei arian ei hun a'i enw da yn y fantol i adeiladu'r Gweilch yn rhanbarth mwyaf llwyddiannus a welodd Cymru erioed. Ychydig iawn o bobl sydd wedi rhoi cymaint, am gyhyd, a gofyn am gyn lleied yn ôl.
"Pryd bynnag y bu angen rhywun ar y Gweilch i sefyll dros y rhanbarth, mae Mike wedi gwneud hynny, am gost bersonol wirioneddol a chydag ymroddiad llwyr. Pan oedd tîm Y11 angen cyngor doeth wrth gyrraedd Abertawe, fe'i rhoddodd yn hael. Mae ei deyrngarwch i'r Crysau Gwynion ac i'r rhanbarth yn ddi-sigl, ac ni allaf feddwl am neb sy'n fwy haeddiannol o Lywyddiaeth y Gweilch. Ar ran pawb yn Y11 a'r Gweilch, llongyfarchiadau, Mike."
Dywedodd Roger Blyth, Cyfarwyddwr y Gweilch, cyn-gefnwr Cymru ac ail brif sgoriwr pwyntiau Clwb Rygbi Abertawe erioed: "Chwaraeais ochr yn ochr â Mike yn Sain Helen ac rwyf wedi gweithio ochr yn ochr ag ef byth ers hynny, felly gallaf ddweud gyda pheth awdurdod na fu erioed ddyn mwy ymroddedig i Abertawe. Mae Mike wedi bod yn gyd-chwaraewr, yn aelod o'r pwyllgor ac yn Gadeirydd, a chyda Rob Davies buddsoddodd filiynau o bunnoedd. Ym mhob un o'r rolau hynny, y clwb a'r rhanbarth a ddaeth gyntaf. Mae wedi bod yn rhan agos o lunio Sain Helen newydd, gan gadeirio grŵp ymgynghorol, ac mae ei arbenigedd proffesiynol a'i ddylanwad wedi gyrru'r gwaith a'r canlyniad a welwn yn Sain Helen heddiw. Mae ei frwdfrydedd yn heintus, mae'n ddi-flewyn-ar-dafod, ac mae'n arweinydd sydd bob amser yn gweld yr hiwmor mewn bywyd – yn enwedig dan bwysau.
"Mae Mike yn deall beth mae'r Crysau Gwynion a'r Gweilch yn ei olygu i ddinas fawr Abertawe. Mae wedi cario hanes Clwb Rygbi Abertawe gydag ef i bopeth y mae wedi'i wneud dros y Gweilch. Y Llywyddiaeth yw anrhydedd uchaf y clwb a'r rhanbarth, ac mae wedi mynd i'r dyn iawn."
Dywedodd Mike James, Llywydd Rygbi'r Gweilch: "Mae gwylio'r clwb yn dod yn ôl i chwarae yn Sain Helen, a'r ddinas yn dod ynghyd y tu ôl iddo, wedi adfywio pawb. Rhan fach o hynny yw fy nghyfraniad i, ochr yn ochr â gwaith ymroddedig llawer o bobl eraill, ac mae hynny'n rhoi boddhad mawr. O'm gêm gyntaf i'r Crysau Gwynion, i'r Gweilch a, heddiw, i'r dychwelyd i Sain Helen, mae'r clwb hwn wedi bod yn rhan enfawr o'm bywyd i a bywyd fy nheulu. Diolchaf i'm gwraig Cynthia am ei chefnogaeth a'i hamynedd mawr, ynghyd â'm meibion a'u gwragedd, fy wyrion a'm gor-wyrion.
"Mae llwyddiant y perchnogion a'r grŵp presennol o reolwyr, hyfforddwyr a chwaraewyr yn gwneud i mi deimlo'n falch iawn, fel y mae'r Bwrdd, ein cynghorwyr, ein gweithwyr a'n cefnogwyr.
"Mae'n anrhydedd cael fy ngwneud yn Llywydd yn yr oes fodern hon, a chael gweithio ochr yn ochr â James Davies-Yandle. Mae helpu Y11 i lunio'r dyfodol wedi rhoi boddhad mawr i mi, a diolchaf iddynt hwy ac i bawb am yr anrhydedd hon."
