Ospreys Rugby are set to show our support for local steelworkers ahead of Friday night’s Guinness PRO12 game against Benetton Treviso at the Liberty Stadium.
With the threat of closure hanging over the Tata Steel plants at both Port Talbot and Llanelli, it is estimated that as many as 20,000 jobs could be at risk, a devastating blow for the local economy and on the lives of the workers, their families and for those involved in businesses that support, supply or rely on the local steel industry.
Any closure would impact directly on countless Ospreys supporters, players and staff, including many of those who will be at the Liberty this Friday night.
At times like this it is vital that a community focused, high profile organisation such as ours stands up for our local economy and makes a stand, backing calls for a solution to save the industry from closure.
We are honoured to welcome local steelworkers onto the pitch ahead of kick-off on Friday night who will parade a special Save Our Steel before the game, and we have no doubt that they will be warmly received by everyone present at the game.
We are also discussing with union representatives other ways in which we can offer support to their members and families and expect to make a further announcement next week.
Kick-off on Friday night is at 7.35pm.
