Ospreys win West Wales Derby double

Ospreys VS SCARLETS
UNITED RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP
Electric brewery field
9TH may 2026

Ospreys try scorers: Dan Edwards (x2), Jac Morgan

Conversions: Dan Edwards (x3)

Penalties: Dan Edwards (x2)

The second leg of the West Wales Derby arrived at the Electric Brewery Field alongside beaming sunshine and a sold out crowd. It was a typical derby clash - high tension, big hits, and drama 'til the very end.

Dan Edwards controlled the game masterfully in the first half, and whilst our neighbours staged a tough fightback it was, of course, captain Jac Morgan who crossed to put us back in front. One more penalty from Dan sealed the deal and the West Wales Derby double was in the bag once again.

From the off, the Ospreys forwards were up for a fight as they put in the big hits and began to assert themselves early on through the scrum. They pushed the Scarlets front row back a several times before ultimately winning the first of many scrum penalties.

TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Kieran Hardy sniped to the right of a ruck but was just brought down, but the support run from Dan Eds gave him a head of steam and the fly half rounded Blair Murray with ease for the try. He converted his own. Ospreys 7 - 0 Scarlets

Scarlets answered back soon after as a penalty gave them a good platform to attack deep into Ospreys territory. Max Douglas crossed for the score after a few successive carries near the try line. Conversion missed. Ospreys 7 - 5 Scarlets

The scrum continued to be an area of dominance for the Ospreys in the first half, with Tom Botha and Steff Thomas winning every battle in the first 20 minutes. Despite the fast pace of the game, errors began to creep in for both teams keeping the try count at one apiece.

With 25 minutes gone, Scarlets were penalised for killing the ball at ruck time on the brink of their 22 and Dan Eds drilled a penalty right through the middle of the sticks to extend the Ospreys’ lead.

The visitors had a clear gameplan to test the Ospreys’ back three in the air, but were getting little joy out of it. As the Scarlets penalty count continued to grow in the first half, they saw their numbers go down to 14 after a tip tackle from Joe Roberts was deemed dangerous.

TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Another Scarlets penalty gave Ospreys an opportunity on the five and the pack backed the scrum to get the job done. With the Scarlets on the back foot, Kieran Hardy went down the blindside and whipped it to Dan Eds who beat his man to finish superbly. He then hit a beauty from the left touchline to finish it off. Ospreys 17 - 5 Scarlets

Scarlets then saw another yellow to finish out the half. Hard to pick a standout performer after in an exemplary first half from Ospreys, but it was Dan Edwards who took responsibility for every point on the board.

HALF TIME: Ospreys 17 - 5 Scarlets

The Scarlets looked like a different side in the early stages of the second half, scoring a penalty early on Ospreys 17 - 8 Scarlets

The continued to apply pressure in Ospreys territory, compounded by a yellow card for Ryan Smith for killing the ball in the ruck. The man advantage came good as Taine Plumtree crossed for Scarelts first try of the game. Conversion missed. Ospreys 17 -  13 Scarlets.

The Scarlets backs were finding fifth gear as they continued to pin Ospreys in their own 22 and put the ball through the hands. They looked in for a certain score, but an incredible tap tackle from Owen Watkin put a stop to that.

But, it would be Scarlets with the next score as their momentum carried Blair Murray over for a finish on the left touchline. Joe Hawkins found his kicking boots and converted to put Scarlets in front for the first time. Ospreys 17 -  20 Scarlets

With 20 minutes to go, it looked like the Ospreys had retaken the lead after a powerful carry from Sam Parry off the tap and go, but a TMO check found the ball was held up.

A game of two halves was definitely the story of this West Wales Derby. Scarlets created a lot of opportunities up to 70 minutes and if not for some quality scramble defence from the Ospreys, they may have scored more. But, the boys held firm and put everything into the final passages of play.

We took successive penalities from the scrum as the replacement front row continued to assert dominance. A kick to the corner saw us driving for the Scarlets line and who else could it be to dive across the whitewash than Jac Morgan on his final home appearence for the Ospeys. Our captain! Dan Edwards drilled the conversion and put us back in the lead with five minutes to go. Ospreys 24 -  20 Scarlets

The boys were totally rejuvinated for the final passages of play, as they bossed their way down the field winning penalty after penalty. The final arm in our favour came with less than sixty seconds on the clock, so Star Boy Dan Edwards lined up for the kick. As the incredible Brewery crowd counted us down, he nailed a final kick in an excellent performance to put the win to bed. Ospreys 27 -  20 Scarlets

That's the West Wales Derby double done for another year, and the Welsh Shield presented to the boys as the best performing Welsh team this season. Thank you to Bridgend Ravens for hosting us this season, and to all the supporters who've turned out to cheer us on.

We'll see you in St Helen's!
