It was Friday Night Lights at the Electric Brewery Field as the Ospreys secured three points in a draw with Lions, bagging the try bonus to add the extra. In trecherous conditions, the boys fought until the very end.
The first five minutes were a tense exchange with neither team carving out any clear cut advantage.
The Lions were the first team to get an opportunity and took it with aplomb. A scrum penalty gave the visitors some good field position and a few phases after the resulting lineout Francke Horn was able to get down the right and touch it down. Conversion missed. Ospreys 0 - 5 Lions.
After the Lions score, the boys began to impose themselves on the South Africans, controlling possession and territory. With the 20-minute mark approaching, it looked like an Ospreys maul was bound for the tryline, but the Lions were able to force the turnover.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! With another lineout near the Lions line, the visitors were once again able to prevent it from going over. But a few powerful carries in succession from the pack eventually saw James Ratti power through. Dan Eds converted. Ospreys 7 - 5 Lions
With the Ospreys in ascendence, the TMO brought the momentum to a halt after a check for a high tackle a few phases prior saw us reduced to 14.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Despite being a man down, the boys continued to assert their dominance. A break spearheaded by Gilo and The Postman was eventually rewarded when Kieran Hardy threw a pinpoint miss pass to Iestyn Hopkins who touched down in the corner. Ospreys 12 - 5 Lions
Oh my carry! Multiple defenders bounced off Ryan Smith which saw the big man break free and offload to Keelan Giles.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Lions gave away a penalty a few phases after the Ry Smith break and were reduced to 14. As the kick went to touch, we were restored to our compliment and the maul sent Morgan Morse over with ease. Dan Eds converted from wide left. Ospreys 19 - 5 Lions
With the clock in the red, the Lions scored their second. Francke Horn powered through a couple of defenders and finished just before he was brought down. Conversion successful. Ospreys 19 - 12 Lions
HALF TIME: OSPREYS 19 - 12 LIONS.
The Lions enjoyed the stronger start of the two teams in the second half, and wereeventually be rewarded after a maul went over from a lineout on the five. PJ Botha was the benefactor before the conversion was missed by Chris Smith. Ospreys 19 - 17 Lions.
With the game in the balance, Ospreys were reduced to 14 after a charge into a maul. The man advantage saw Lions take the lead. Quan Horn broke down the left touchline and recovered his dink over to finish untouched. Chris Smith converted. Ospreys 19 - 24 Lions
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! The boys marched down the field and a penalty was kicked for the corner on a thread by Dan Eds. A few phases later, Reuban played an identical miss pass to Kieran’s in the first half. Dan Eds’ kick looked to be going over but the intense wind pushed it off course. Ospreys 24 - 24 Lions
It looked like Ospreys had scored again as Ryan Smith took multiple defenders over the line with him, but the Lions held the ball up and cleared their lines.
With around seven minutes to go, Ospreys were carrying like men possessed. A pick of the bunch being a Cam Jones monster run that will make the highlight reel. But the weather had turned trecherous, with the wind and rain swirling.
With the clock at eighty minutes, Ospreys were awarded another penalty, but the ball was imposible to direct in the conditions. Ospreys contiuned to batter at the Lions line, but there was no way through. Dan Edwards stood up and attempted the drop goal, but the wind took it and it fell short.
In the final play of the game, Lions charged up to the other end and dinked the ball into the corner, but the final reciever knocked on for full time to confirm a draw.
