Ospreys learn Challenge Cup opponents

The draw for the 2016/17 European Rugby Challenge took place in Neuchatel, Switzerland, on Wednesday afternoon, and the Ospreys were drawn to face English and French opposition.

  • Rugby legends Dimitri Yachvili and Ieuan Evans made the draw at the home of EPCR on Wednesday afternoon
  • French T14 sides Grenoble and Lyon, and Aviva Premiership club Newcastle Falcons drawn alongside the Ospreys in Pool 2
  • This year's European campaign kicks off on the weekend of 13/14/15/16 October

Having been pulled out of the hat in the seeding pre-draw to take a Tier 1 spot, the draw then saw the Ospreys placed in Pool Two, before the names of Grenoble, Newcastle Falcons and Lyon joined them.

The Ospreys have never faced any of the three teams in European action previously, although they have played Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park in the LV= Cup back in the 2010/11 season, losing 18-17. and they faced Lyon in a pre-season fixture in Switzerland the following summer, losing 38-10 It will be the first time that the region has played Grenoble - although the French side played both Bridgend and Neath in European competition in the pre-regional era.
