Ospreys host specialist coaching clinic on

Coaches from across the region took part in a special coaching seminar on the subject of 'Defensive Systems' at Pyle RFC this weekend.

Led by Tony Thomas, Ospreys Coach Development Officer, the seminar kicked off with a presentation on various defensive systems, before the participating the coaches watched two sides in Heineken Cup action from this season in order to analyse the different defensive methods used. The coaches were then divided into groups and presented with various attacking scenarios, and were then tasked with devising appropriate defensive strategies to cope with these situations, before sharing their thoughts to the rest of the group.

The feedback from the participants was extremely positive, Tony Thomas saying:

“The interaction within the group was challenging and innovative. The response from everyone present was enthusiastic and very informative. These seminars are a vital part of our coach development programme, as they allow coaches in the region to share their thoughts on crucial aspects of the modern game in a progressive environment. It is always extremely positive to see coaches from around the region taking time out to attend and further their development and understanding, and such events will help to create a wider of pool of quality coaches across the region, which will, in the longer term, help to make for better players.”

The seminar followed on from successful ones already hosted by the Ospreys this season, covering topics including the ‘Tackle Contest Area’, ‘Pre Contact Attacking Skills’, ‘The Lineout’ and ‘Development of Individual and Small Unit Skills’.
