“The Stepping Stones Appeal is one that is close to most Welsh rugby fans hearts after the Captain’s Climb almost two years ago, so we are delighted to be teaming up with Velindre Cancer Centre to help raise awareness of the fantastic work that they do. It’s not very often that you get the opportunity to play a round of golf with an Osprey, so I hope our supporters will join us at Langland Bay in early April”.

Andrew Morris Head of Fundraising at Velindre said: “The relationship with the Ospreys has already proved to be very fruitful, with awareness of lung cancer being raised significantly. Our Ospreys Question of Sport event later this month has completely sold out, and the Ospreys Golf Day will be a terrific day out – the support of Ospreys players, staff and supporters has been magnificent”.

About the Stepping Stones Appeal

In January 2009 Velindre Cancer Centre launched its lung cancer research programme called the Stepping Stones Appeal to increase awareness of their work, and to raise the money necessary to continue to fund and expand its research programmes.

Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer death in Wales. It is estimated by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer in Wales.

Following the success of a number of fundraising initiatives including the Captains Climb to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Mair’s Walk and the Stepping Stones Rugby Gala Dinners, some major investments have taken place; the Stepping Stones Appeal has donated £350,000 so that the Wales Cancer Bank can collect lung cancer samples, enabling researchers all of the World to be able to utilise this ground breaking service.

There are nearly 2,000 people diagnosed each year and we are seeing an increasing number of suffers who have never smoked. Many people are surviving cancer than ever before thanks to early detection and better treatment.

Your support of the Stepping Stones Appeal will help us to advance our research into lung cancer, stage by stage, step by step.
