Morgan Morris

Morgan Morris named as WRWA Young Player of the Year

Morgan Morris was named as the Welsh Rugby Writers Young Player of the Year recently, following on from his solid 22/23 season.

Morgan has 76 appearances for the team so far, winning Ospreys' player of the season award three times in a row.

To speak around his award and everything Ospreys, Morgan sat down with Alex Bywater and Gareth Griffiths.

When asked around his good form last year, Morgan said: “I think I’ve said it before but as a team we probably weren’t overly happy with our performances and where we ended up by not winning the Welsh Shield and not being in the top eight. That makes it harder for me to look at my own performances and think I did well because at the end of the day it’s a team game and we want the team to do well.

“We’re really gunning to do as well as we can this season in the league, Europe and in the Welsh Shield. We want to do as well as we can in everything we enter.”

Speaking on the extended pre-season, Morgan said: “It’s been a lot longer than what we’re used to and there’s still a long way to go. It’s been good. We’ve almost had a clean slate this year with new people coming in and people leaving we’ve all seen. You’ve seen there have been people leaving at every club in Wales. Everyone is starting again and we’re getting closer together as a group and with the coaching team. I think it’s helped us having a longer pre-season so we can bond as a team.

“I’ve been speaking to the coaches and with a long pre-season, we’ve had longer to work on our weaknesses as players as well as our strengths. We’re getting better. Hopefully this season we’ll do better as individuals and as a team. This longer pre-season has helped us because we’ve had more one-on-one time for personal improvements.”

When asked if he had any goals to make the Welsh squad, Morgan replied: “Every man and their dog wants to play for Wales if they’re from Wales. Of course I want to play for Wales, just like everyone else. All I can do is keep playing as well as possible for the Ospreys and hopefully I get that call-up at some point.”

Speaking on what it’s been like to have Justin Tipuric around for pre-season, Morgan said: We’re lucky to have him here, especially in this long pre-season. Every year since I’ve been here he’s been really good for me in terms of helping me. He’s probably one of the easiest people to talk to in the whole squad and one of the most helpful if you need anything. If you want any advice, he’s there for you. The fact he’s here for a 16-week pre-season means we’re really privileged.

Morgan was also asked for his thoughts on the Ospreys’ London game against the Sharks: “I think it’s exciting. Obviously, the team has worked out it might be good for us marketing wise. If it works out well for us, then we’ve got a whole new group of people who probably haven’t watched the Ospreys play rugby before which will be good to get into.

“I think it’s exciting to be playing the Sharks in London. There are a lot of South Africans there and you saw how many there were there for their game with New Zealand. There might be a few away fans there for our game as well as well as our fans.”
