MCC to host the Ospreys once again

The Ospreys will return to Mumbles Cricket Club next month for a charity 20/20 match.

The match, which is scheduled for Friday 5th August, will be the second between the two teams. The inaugural clash in 2009 saw an Ospreys XI featuring the likes of Sean Holley, Marty Holah, James Hook, Filo Tiatia, Ian Evans and Jonathan Thomas defeated by 41 runs, before last year’s scheduled clash was postponed following a week of unseasonal torrential rain.

The match will once again take place at Mumbles’ picturesque Marespool Ground at Plunch Lane, with the first over to be bowled at 4.00pm, weather permitting. Admission will be just £3 with free admission for U16’s, and facilities for supporters on the night will include a barbecue and bar facility.

The 2009 game was played out on a glorious sunny evening, with hundreds turning out to watch the action and raising more than £1,500 for LATCH, the Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity. The charity to benefit from funds raised at this summer’s fixture will be announced shortly.

Ospreys Director of Coaching, Scott Johnson, said he is looking forward to the evening:

“It’ll be good to pull on the whites and enjoy a game of cricket with the boys. It’s great to be able to go out into the community to play a game like this for a good cause, I’m sure it’s going to be a great evening for everyone involved.

“Hopefully we won’t get typical Welsh rain, which means that we can have a great time as a group while helping to raise some funds for a good cause. We’re all looking forward to it, and hopefully there’ll be plenty of fans joining us for the occasion.”

Mumbles Cricket Club’s history extends over 100 years and today it fields three League XIs on Saturday’s, a Midweek League XI, and seven Junior League sides, with the first team competing in the Swalec Premier Cricket League. In 2008, the club was awarded with the prestigious ECB Clubmark accreditation. The Marespool ground has Minor Counties status after hosting one-day cup fixtures for Wales.

Further details of the day, including confirmation of the full Ospreys XI, will be brought to you as soon as possible.
