Matavesi leads Fiji into PNC final

Josh Matavesi scored 17 points, including a first half-try, to inspire Fiji to a nailbiting 27-22 win over Japan on Wednesday, securing his country’s place in next week’s Pacific Nations Cup Final.

Matavesi also kicked two penalties and three conversions, with his former Ospreys team-mate Tevita Cavubati touching down for the opening try and winger Metuisela Talebula also scoring.

Down to 13 men in the final minutes as Japan applied pressure on their opponents line, resulting in two yellow cards, Fiji held on for their victory.

Meanwhile, Canada once again suffered heartbreak, racing into a 13-point lead against Samoa before being pegged back and, although they led by four points with the clock showing time-up, an 81st minute try from Sakaria Taulafo handed the Samoans a 21-20 win which left Canada winless at the foot of the table.

Fiji now play Samoa in next Monday’s final while Canada play USA to avoid the wooden spoon.
