Josh Matavesi disciplinary update

Matavesi cleared to play in the New Year's Day derby versus the Dragons at the Liberty Stadium after disciplinary hearing in Dublin.

Josh Matavesi appeared today before an independent PRO12 Rugby Disciplinary Committee having been cited by an independent Citing Commissioner for an alleged dangerous "lifting” tackle, contrary to Law 10.4 (j), in the Guinness PRO12 match between the Scarlets and the Ospreys on Boxing Day.

The Disciplinary Committee, which heard the case in Dublin, was chaired by David Martin and also comprised George Spotswood and Philip Orr (all from Ireland). They reviewed the video footage of the incident and the other evidence, and listened to explanations from the player and his representative.

The player acknowledged that he had committed foul play under Law 10.4 (j) but argued that it had not been sufficiently serious so as to have warranted a red card.

The Disciplinary Committee upheld the citing but agreed with the player that his actions had not warranted a red card.

Accordingly, the Disciplinary Committee imposed no sanction and Mr Matavesi is therefore able to return to playing with immediate effect.

There will be no further comment on this matter from Ospreys Rugby.
