Derby action this weekend for Ospreys Women

The Ospreys Women team to play Scarlets Women, at St Helens, Swansea, on Sunday 23rd October 2016, 2pm KO, has been confirmed.

Sunday the 23rd of October is a unique day in the short history of the Ospreys Women’s team as it is the first time the region plays at the prestigious St Helens ground in Swansea.

Womens rugby is on a high at the moment with the Great Britain team having just come up short in the Olympic Rugby 7s in Rio and with the Rugby World Cup in Ireland set to take place next summer, there is time to fit in the first year of Autumn internationals for the women as well as the Six Nations.

With the National Women’s team having just announced that their home games are to be played in the BT Sport Arms Park, we are delighted that the regional game now comes to St Helens.

This Sunday we take on the Scarlets in a vital game that sees the battle of the west in the regional competition. Having had a tough outing against the Dragons during round 2, we will be looking to turn playing at our new home into a major advantage. Playing against the Scarlets in a local derby is always a special occasion at any level but Sunday’s game is going to be extra special to play at a venue coloured in rugby history.

Admission is £5, with U16s going free.

Head Coach Jonathan Hawker commented:

“Coming off the back of a disappointing loss to the Dragons in Round 2, we are looking forward to facing our local rivals, the Scarlets this coming Sunday. This with the added excitement of playing our first game at our new home at St Helens, we will be looking to get off to the perfect start.

“While there were lots of positives to come out of the last round, we have identified areas of our game that need to develop and hopefully we will see that continued improvement in Round 3. It’s pleasing to be able to select from a near full strength squad for what is going to be a very stern challenge against a very strong unbeaten Scarlets team, but one we relish with two teams that play a very similar style of promoting the ball and play a fast open brand of rugby.”
