Cwmgors gets Ospreys visit for special skills

Ospreys players took part in a special Club Development Skills Day at Cwmgors RFC at the weekend, an event hosted by the region's Community Rugby team

Eli Walker, Joe Rees and Will Taylor, all Wales U20 caps and homegrown talent from Swansea, visited the Amman Valley club for an event that had been organised by Andrew Thomas, Player Development Officer for the Afan Nedd District.

The purpose of the day was to educate the local youngsters on the importance of developing rugby skills though practical games, as well as encouraging new participants to the game to join Cwmgors RFC.

The event ran for three hours between 11am and 2pm, and was open to anyone in the U13, U14 or U15 age-grades from the local area with a passion for rugby.

Cwmgors, whose senior side competed in Swalec League Five South West last season, are the latest to benefit from the Ospreys commitment to increasing the playing base in the region, and the first this season to host such an event after 20 special club development nights were hosted across the region throughout 2010/11.

Ospreys Development Officers led the youngsters through a series of special coaching drills before the trio of players completed some technical skill delivery sessions with the enthusiastic players, finishing the day with a well received question and answer session.

Cwmgors RFC Junior Secretary and Child Welfare Officer, Darren Thomas, said:

“The young players really enjoyed the day. I’d like to thank the Ospreys for their continued support and investment in the local community.”

WRU/Ospreys Regional Community Manager, Ben Rose, added:

“This was a very successful event, and another example of the commitment that the Ospreys have to developing local rugby talent. Working closely with clubs like Cwmgors, we can help to grow the local player base, making the clubs stronger, which in turn will make the Ospreys stronger. Like everything else we do, our ultimate cause is to do the right thing for Ospreylia.”

Darren also encouraged other local players to go along on a Wednesday evening at 6pm to join in with the fun with their Mini and Junior Sections, where the players will have a positive and enjoyable experience at their local rugby club.
