The Ospreys in conjunction with the WRU and Beach Rugby Wales are pleased to be jointly running the 4th Beach Rugby Wales Festival held in Swansea Bay. The event has grown over the last 3 years and has proven to be a real success at encouraging adults who may not usually play rugby, to come and try the non contact version of the game.

Over 220 players in 22 teams participated last year and with involvement of the Ospreys and the WRU it is hoped that the event will grow even larger and become a major summer attraction across South Wales.

Beach rugby being non contact means that male, female and mixed teams can compete against one another and whilst all games are competitive the event is a real social occasion.

The Ospreys and WRU are keen to develop events such as this as it expands the game to an ever increasing and diverse audience who may not wish to participate in the full game. Continued adult participation in rugby is good for the health of the game and for the health of the participants. With diabetes and other weight related illnesses on the increase across Wales, any events that promote. Adult physical activity can only be positive.

It is hoped that local South Wales employers will recognise some of the additional team building value inherent in participation and enter business teams into the festival this year. Rugby development staff across the Ospreys region will be contacting local businesses to encourage them to enter teams.

There is an added bonus for participating teams to win the competition this year. Beach Rugby Wales has secured a place for the 2009 winners to represent Wales in the Lignano Beach Rugby festival, Italy the following year, 2010.

This competition has been going since 2001 and it attracts teams from all over the world. There are a few differences between our competition and theirs a small matter of full contact instead of touch is the main difference. Please see the attached You Tube link at last year's promotion video.

Although the winners will be qualified for the competition there is need to gain sponsorship to fund the journey.

This year the competition will take place in Swansea on the 25th July with the first match kicking off at 12:00. For more news on this event click on link taking you to the 2009 tournament.
