Velindre Cancer Centre partnership extended

The Victory Over Cancer campaign will be the official charity for the coming season

Ospreys Rugby today confirmed that its partnership with Velindre Cancer Centre has been extended for a second year, with the region supporting the Victory Over Cancer campaign as its official charity for 2013/14.

The Ospreys will again wear a special charity jersey during their LV= Cup campaign, which will feature the Victory Over Cancer logo, with a donation from each jersey sold going to the charity.

The Ospreys will also be supporting a number of events throughout the year, helping to further raise awareness of the charity and its work.

A donation of £4,519.59 was handed over by the Ospreys last month to Andrew Morris, Head of Fundraising at Velindre after the first year of the partnership, where the region supported the Stepping Stones Appeal.

In addition to the charity jersey, the region also supported other activities and initiatives organised on behalf of the Stepping Stones Appeal throughout the year including a special Question of Sport evening at the Towers Hotel, events which have raised additional funding for the charity.

The first event of the new season is the inaugural Velindre Victory over Cancer Walk taking place at the Gnoll Country Park on Sunday 28 July.

Ospreys Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Hore, commented:

“Having enjoyed such a successful first season working with Velindre Cancer Centre and the Stepping Stones Appeal, it was an easy decision to be able to commit to another year supporting the outstanding work being done at Velindre.

“While Stepping Stones has raised substantial funds to help the fight against lung cancer, Velindre’s Victory Over Cancer campaign is helping to raise funds for the wider fight against cancer in general.

“Obviously the revenue raised via the sale of the charity jersey is welcomed, but what is more important for the longer term is the additional profile and awareness of the charity, and its work, that comes from its association with the Ospreys.

“We look forward to working closely with the team at Velindre throughout the coming soon.”

Andrew Morris, Head of Fundraising at Velindre, said:

“We are thrilled that the Ospreys have chosen Velindre as their charity of the year for another year and are really looking forward to working with them to raise money for cancer patients and their families here in Wales.  We are also looking forward to organising more joint fundraising events, starting with the Velindre Victory Over Cancer Walk on 28th July in Gnoll Country Park.  This is a stunning walk and we hope plenty of people turn up to show their support for the Ospreys and Velindre. ABOUT VELINDRE’S VICTORY OVER CANCER

Facing up to, and dealing with cancer is one of the biggest challenges that anyone can face; it affects everything – family, friends, work colleagues and how you live your life. It can be a very frightening time.

At Velindre we strive to support cancer patients and their families through this difficult period, and our specially trained and highly committed staff strive every day to make this time as comfortable as possible.

We believe that every hour, every day, every month that someone survives cancer is a victory.  So we are launching a new campaign to highlight this positive message - Velindre Victory over Cancer.

Every pound that is raised will be used to help us in our battle to achieve the ultimate goal. Every event, every function no matter how small, will be a celebration because anything that helps defy cancer will contribute towards our aim of Victory over Cancer.

Patient Centred care is at the heart of everything we do at Velindre; money raised from our Victory over Cancer campaign will be used to ensure the best possible support to patients and their families dealing with cancer. It will allow us to fund ground breaking research, specialist equipment, and new developments so that our staff have access to the most up to date training and techniques.

Someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes. It is estimated that by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer.  But already more people in Wales are surviving cancer because of early detection and better treatments.

Support our campaign and help us to achieve Victory over Cancer.
