The Victory Over Cancer campaign will be the official charity for the coming season
Ospreys Rugby today confirmed that its partnership with Velindre Cancer Centre has been extended for a second year, with the region supporting the Victory Over Cancer campaign as its official charity for 2013/14.The Ospreys will again wear a special charity jersey during their LV= Cup campaign, which will feature the Victory Over Cancer logo, with a donation from each jersey sold going to the charity.
The Ospreys will also be supporting a number of events throughout the year, helping to further raise awareness of the charity and its work.
A donation of £4,519.59 was handed over by the Ospreys last month to Andrew Morris, Head of Fundraising at Velindre after the first year of the partnership, where the region supported the Stepping Stones Appeal.
In addition to the charity jersey, the region also supported other activities and initiatives organised on behalf of the Stepping Stones Appeal throughout the year including a special Question of Sport evening at the Towers Hotel, events which have raised additional funding for the charity.
The first event of the new season is the inaugural Velindre Victory over Cancer Walk taking place at the Gnoll Country Park on Sunday 28 July.
Ospreys Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Hore, commented:
“Having enjoyed such a successful first season working with Velindre Cancer Centre and the Stepping Stones Appeal, it was an easy decision to be able to commit to another year supporting the outstanding work being done at Velindre.
“While Stepping Stones has raised substantial funds to help the fight against lung cancer, Velindre’s Victory Over Cancer campaign is helping to raise funds for the wider fight against cancer in general.
“Obviously the revenue raised via the sale of the charity jersey is welcomed, but what is more important for the longer term is the additional profile and awareness of the charity, and its work, that comes from its association with the Ospreys.
“We look forward to working closely with the team at Velindre throughout the coming soon.”

Someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes. It is estimated that by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer. But already more people in Wales are surviving cancer because of early detection and better treatments.
