Montauban got off to a quick start, winning a turnover inside the Ospreys 22 and opting to go for the three points off the tee. After 2 minutes, the hosts led 3-0.
Ospreys responded almost instantly, carrying with tenacity and putting instant pressure on the Montauban defence after their opening score.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! A penalty near the Montauban line gave the opportunity for a tap and go. A well worked set play allowed Ross Moriarty to build a head of steam and power over for the first try of the game. Walshy added the extras with the conversion. Montauban 3 - 7 Ospreys.
Ospreys continued their early dominance after the first score, the attack was in full flow and proved too much for the home side, with a defender sent to the bin for an intentional knock on. Ospreys then crossed the line, but were held up, before eventually the pressure told.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! The boys went to the corner and the maul was rumbled over, with Morgan Morse profiting with the score. Walshy kicked the extras to make it Montauban 3 - 14 Ospreys.
Montauban seemed to awaken after the second Ospreys score, enjoying some possession of their own, but an organised Ospreys defensive line meant that it was to no avail. Lewis Lloyd and Gwilym Evans were both building a monstrous tackle count early on.
The pressure continued and it looked like Ospreys had scored the third try of the game after a magnificent solo run from Nagy, but it was chalked off for a forward pass in the build-up prior.
Montauban began making their way up the field, but a loose ball from the side of a ruck was collected by Keelan Giles who put in a perfect 50/22. The pin point kick gave us some quality field position and the opportunity to add another score.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Soon after the 50/22, the backs once again began to cut through the Montauban defence and Nagy was able to put a nice pop outside to Keelan who walked in untouched. Montauban 3 - 19 Ospreys.
Montauban were not going away without a fight, and were able to score their first try of the game after a string of powerful carries near the Ospreys line, crossing through a driving maul on 36 minutes. The conversion was missed. Montauban 8 - 19 Ospreys.
The Ospreys back three were demonstrating some incredible aerial ability in the first half, winning anything that was contestable with unwavering ease, whilst a young pack was providing a strong platform to play from.
HALF TIME – MONTAUBAN 8, OSPREYS 19
The Ospreys scrum grew in dominance as the game went on, with the young front row making light work of their opponents. Despite returning from injury, Ryan Conbeer was putting in some vicious hits throughout the game.
As the second half progressed, Montauban introduced some fresh legs and began to look like a different side, enjoying some strong spells of possession.
With 15 minutes played in the second half, Ospreys were reduced to 14 and Montabaun were able to make instant use of the man advantage, touching the ball down in the corner. The conversion was successful and it was game one. Montauban 15 - 19 Ospreys.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Despite being a man down, Ospreys answered back instantly. The maul was the weapon of choice and it guided Efan Daniel to his first try for the club. Walshy kicked a belter from near the touchline. Montauban 15 - 25 Ospreys.
With their backs against the wall Ospreys came up big and forced a turnover, with Ross rolling back the years and running half the pitch before he was brought down. From the resulting break, a penalty was won, allowing the boys to kick it further up field and set up store in the hosts' half.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Having taken the high-ball, Ryan Conbeer broke down the left touchline. The ball changed hands to Evardi Boshoff, then Jack Walsh, who ultimately put away Kieran Hardy, finishing with one of his trademark breakaway scores. Walshy once again added the extras. Montauban 15 - 33 Ospreys.
Montauban may not have been able to win the game by this late stage, but French sides will always fight for their pride, and refused to go away. Their efforts pushed the clock to 85 minutes before they got the final say on the score board with a try.
