It was a tight tussle against Ulster at the Electric Brewery Field with only three points in it at half time. Ospreys held firm and a huge shift from the foreward pack saw the boys bring home a much-needed win to keep us in the fight for the knockouts.
The game kicked off with a real edge, with both sides putting in some big hits as they took the temperature.
TRY FOR OSPREYS! A penalty gave the Ospreys quality field position from a lineout and a well worked move saw Ross Moriarty carry the ball within metres of the line. A few phases later Cormac Foley spotted a half gap and sniped past the ruck to dot the ball down. Jack Walsh converted. Ospreys 7 - 0 Ulster.
Ulster answered straight back with a score of their own. Some patient carrying opened up space on the right wing and a crossfield kick was recovered by Zac Ward. Conversion missed. Ospreys 7 - 5 Ulster.
Ulster had the momentum and bagged their second score not long after. A maul got them close before Tom Stewart went over for the finish. Conversion missed. Ospreys 7 - 10 Ulster.
Ulster continued to enjoy the majority of possessio,n but some relentless pressure from the Ospreys’ defence began to force errors from the visitors.
The next opportunity went to the Ospreys. With the ball within inches from the line, the Ulster defenders seemed to be losing yards in contact. Unfortunately, we were penalised for going off feet in a ruck clearout after a slip.
The boys continued to apply the pressure on the Ulster line, but their bend-don’t-break ethos was clear to see and the score stayed level.
Ulster were clinical to shut out the half and keep their leas going into the break.
HALF TIME: OSPREYS 7 - 10 ULSTER
The Ospreys pack were asserting their dominace at the start of the second half, racking up the penalities at scrum time. It looked like we'd grabbed the first score after some powerful carrying from the pack, but Ulster were able to hold the ball up over the line.
The boys were working the ball into opposition territory with ease, but multiple trips in succession to the visitors’ redzone were unfruitful. Still, our scrum domiance continued as the Ulster front row came under intense pressure. The ref gave a warning, and it was all change in the front rows as a result.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Finally, pressure in the Ulster 22 paid off. A tap and go near the five was eventually finished off by the powerhouse James Ratti. Walshy converted superbly from wide left.Ospreys 14 - 10 Ulster.
Ospreys had all the possesion in the second half, but seeing us take the lead lit a fire under Ulster who were straight on the attack from the restart. They pushed their way over the score, but it went to TMO and the try was disallowed for a high shot. Ulster saw yellow, and Ospreys kept the lead.
The boys were galvanised by a lucky escape and were soon on the charge, cheered on by a racus Brewery crowd. Owen Watkin sent a beautiful dink through the defensive line. Lowry recovered over the link, but spilled the ball as he slid through and Dan Kasende was close behind to dot it down. The postman delivers! Walshy nailed another conversion to put the game to bed. Ospreys 21 - 10 Ulster.
The final minutes of the game saw Ulster on the Ospreys line once again, but we held strong deny the visitors a conciliatory bonus point. A huge win for the boys at home!
