Ospreys try scorers: Luke Davies, Phil Cokanasiga, Evardi Boshoff
Ospreys travelled to Edinburgh with over 20 players unavailable to injury and international duty. The boys fought hard until the very end, scoring three tries, denying the hosts a winning bonus point, and securing one of their own.
Ospreys got off to a solid start in the opening exchanges, winning the battle for territory and holding up well in the collision. Max Nagy was quick off the blocks at the back, imperial in the air and relentless in the kick chase.
With 15 minutes played the Ospreys rolling maul looked destined for the line, but Edinburgh held up ball up to keep the game scoreless. This defensive win invigorated Edinburgh, who began to enjoy their own of possession and territory.
Edinburgh had their own maul near the Ospreys line but the boys were able to stop it dead in tracks. Phil Cokanasiga won a crucial turnover the phase after.
TRY FOR OSPREYS! Jack Walsh whipped it out to the Postman who beat his man down the right and shipped it inside the Luke Davies who then popped to Evardi Boshoff. Evardi was brought down just before the line but gifted a beautiful pass outside the back to Lukey who finished a blockbuster team try. Conversion missed. Edinburgh 0 - 5 Ospreys.
The Ospreys forwards won multiple scrum penalties in the first half to give the attack some positive field position to work with. The maul defence was also nothing short of outstanding throughout, effectively negating Edinburgh’s attacking options. Ryan Smith and Phil Cokanasiga were a highlight, teaming up for a vital turnover on the Ospreys five metre line on twenty minutes,
After an extending spell of pressure in the Ospreys 22, Edinburgh finally answered back as Tom Currie was the eventual benefactor of some strong carries from the home side. Conversion missed with five minutes remaining in the first half. Edinburgh 5 - 5 Ospreys.
With half time approaching, Edinburgh tried to test the Ospreys defence again but another exemplary string of defensive sets saw them stifle a final Edinburgh attack to close out the half.
HALFTIME: EDINBURGH 5 - 5 OSPREYS
Ospreys started the second half as they finished the first, giving Edinburgh little to no time in attack. An out-of-position Lewis Lloyd was often leading the charge, making tackle after tackle and bring a constant nuisance at the ruck.
GET OFF THE BUS! Ross Moriarty was allowed to pick up a head of steam and an Edinburgh defender was thrown into the air after Ross politely sat him out.
TRY FOR THE OSPREYS! Lead by the playmaking of Walsh and Nagy, the backs began to motor and sliced open the Edinburgh defence over multiple phases. The ball found its way into the hands of Phil Cokanasiga on the right touchline, who stepped a few defenders and sold an outrageous dummy before sliding over. Conversion unsuccessful. Edinburgh 5 - 10 Ospreys.
Edinburgh were next on the board, as the home maul came up trumps and Harri Morris powered over for the score. Ross Thompson added the extras to give Edinburgh their first lead of the game. Edinburgh 12 - 10 Ospreys.
There was an extended period of Edinburgh pressure, but the Osprey defensive line continued to hold strong. Edinburgh had possession in the Ospreys 22 and were hunting to extend their lead, but Kian Hire came up with a massive turnover to allow Ospreys to clear the lines.
The Ospreys pack held off another Edinburgh maul, but with eight minutes to go a well-placed grubber from Finn Thompson was recovered by Harry Patterson under the posts to send him over. Conversion good. Edinburgh 19 - 10 Ospreys.
This fighting Ospreys team never gave up, searching desperately for the another score to bring them in range of a bonus point.
TRY FOR OSPREYS! The pack went through the phases near the Edinburgh which gave the backs a platform to trigger the ball out wide. Phil fed Evardi Boshoff, who ran a clinical line to bash through untouched. Walshy converted with a few minutes remaining. Edinburgh 19 - 17 Ospreys.
Possession was with Edinburgh in the final minutes, but there was no way through a defiant Ospreys defensive line who held on until the very end to deny the hosts a bonus point win.
There was no doubting the effort from your Ospreys team who did us proud away from home.
