Community team host a week of beach tag rugby festivals
The beaches of Ospreylia will be transformed into rugby pitches by the region’s Community Rugby team next week when they host a three-day beach tag rugby festival.
WRU Participation Officers from the three Districts in the region, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend, have invited every primary school in Ospreylia to participate in a series of day long events taking place at beaches in their area where they were given the chance to enjoy rugby in unique seafront environments.
Wednesday sees Neath Port Talbot pupils heading to Aberavon Beach, on Thursday children from Bridgend have their go at Rest Bay in Porthcawl and then Friday is the turn of Swansea schools in front of the 360 Beach and Water Sports Centre on Swansea Bay.
It’s the second year in succession that the Community Team have run the festival and they are hoping to top the 512 children who took part last summer in mixed teams of boys and girls.
WRU/Ospreys Regional Community Manager, Ben Rose, said:
“The beach tag rugby days last summer were a huge success for everyone concerned, with the children and school staff fully engaged with the Participation Officers and their Community Coaches, working on communication, motivation and fair play.
“We are fortunate enough in Ospreylia to be able to offer the chance for children to enjoy rugby in the unique surroundings of our fabulous coastline, and to see hundreds of children enjoying themselves with rugby ball in hand in such a great environment is fantastic.
“This year we are expecting to see even more pupils involved allowing more children the chance to taste beach tag rugby and bringing bigger numbers into contact with the Ospreys, helping to grow interest in the game at grass roots level across the region.”
