Alun Wyn signs new Ospreys deal

By Ospreys Rugby | 24/01/2014

Ospreys Rugby are delighted to announce that Alun Wyn Jones has committed his future to the region.

The influential Jones has ended speculation on his future by putting pen-to-paper on a contract that will see him remain with the Ospreys until after the next Rugby World Cup.

Speaking about his new deal, Alun Wyn commented:

“I’m very happy to be able to resolve my future, which means I can now concentrate solely on my rugby. It’s flattering to have received offers from elsewhere, but at this point in my career my focus is on being in the right environment to ensure the longevity of both my domestic and international career.

“It’s important to me that I’m playing the right level of rugby to ensure I am at my best, which is why it makes sense for me to accept the offer on the table from the Ospreys.”

28-year old Jones has become a mainstay of both the Ospreys and Wales pack since becoming one of the first youngsters to come through the regional development pathway. His senior Ospreys debut came in September 2005 as a second half replacement in the first ever competitive fixture at the Liberty Stadium, a Magners League game against Leinster.

Since then he has so far managed to clock up an impressive 159 Ospreys appearances, scoring 13 tries, and was appointed captain of his home region in August 2010.

Having represented Wales at age-grade level, the former Bonymaen RFC youngster made his full international debut on the 2006 tour of Argentina. In total, he has 74 Wales caps, and had been a part of three Six Nations winning sides including the Grand Slams of 2008 and 2012. He has also been selected on two British & Irish Lions tours, to South Africa and Australia, featuring in six test matches. He started all three during this summer’s series Down Under, captaining the team in the decisive third test win.

Andy Lloyd, Rugby Operations Manager at the Ospreys, said it was great news for the region that Alun Wyn has re-signed.

“It will give everybody involved with the region, players, coaches, staff, commercial partners and supporters, a huge boost” said Lloyd.

“Alun Wyn has been, and continues to be, a fantastic servant to this region and is a true role model to those around him. A natural leader, he demands the highest standards of himself and everybody in this environment, and it will be a better place with him around in the coming seasons.

“Given the uncertainty that still surrounds the game in Wales in general, we’ve given Alun Wyn reassurances regarding his future options, but it is fantastic news that he is staying at the Liberty Stadium.”
