OitC ready for new TACKLE launch

By Ospreys Rugby | 08/04/2019

As part of Swansea Learning Festival, learners participating in the highly acclaimed TACKLE programme attended the Liberty Stadium for a tour and workshop with the DVLA.

Over 60 students from Ysgol Bryntawe, St Joseph’s Comprehensive School and Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen have already signed up to the new programme and it was great to see a large percentage of them attend the day.

After making a really positive start, the team can already see how the grant is going to make an impact with lifelong skills and experiences. The plan over the coming weeks is to engage with more schools and we already have 100 pupils from around the region signed up. These learners will be fully engaged with weekly classroom and practical sessions over the next two years.

Next Thursday (11th April) we will also be kicking off our latest Employability Programme for 18-24 year olds at the Morganstone Brewery Field, a programme supported by the Job Centre.

TACKLE includes a number of programmes are designed to work with disaffected young people, aged from 12-24, who are disengaged with school, education or employment, with the aim of to create a better future for young people facing tough challenges.

There are three distinct strands to TACKLE, the schools programme for 12-16 year olds, a traineeship programme working with 16-18 year olds not in education, training or employment and an employability programme aimed at 18-24 year olds, similarly not education, training or employment.

Dorian Evans, Employability Co-ordinator, Ospreys in the Community, said:

TACKLE is a major strand of the work that we do at Ospreys in the Community. We link with education and careers partners to help these young people, giving them clear educational and personal development options.”

Thanks to the grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, the TACKLE Schools project will become a two year programme for the teenagers and will use rugby and the Ospreys brand,  as a tool to improve their self-confidence, interpersonal, employability and life skills as well as offering them a chance to explore different educational and employment opportunities for the future.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have been given this grant. It will have such a massive impact on our project. With the funding we will be able to develop our programme. We’ve had a lot of success so far with our pilot project for TACKLE, but it's really exciting that because of this funding we will be able to work with many more disengaged pupils than before and even more importantly we will be able to work with them for longer. We’ll now be engaging students in a new two year project meaning the impact on their self-confidence and interpersonal skills will be huge, and we will have more time to support them to gain qualifications and employability experience.”

Rhan o gลตyl dysgu Abertawe, mae dysgwyr ar y rhaglen TACKLE wedi mynychu’r Stadiwm y Liberty o daith a weithdy gyda’r DVLA.
