Community coaches help launch a Welsh first

By Ospreys Rugby | 25/02/2011

Morriston RFC is set to launch Wales' first girls only U11 team next week, with the help of the Ospreys Community Development Team.

Coaches from the Ospreys will lead a development night at Maes Collen on Friday 4th April, between 6 and 7pm, with a view to helping the club to recruit enough players to make the team a viable project.

Once the Morriston team is established and training regularly, the Community Development Team will then be looking to work with other clubs in the region, including in the Afan Nedd and Bridgend districts, where there is potential demand to run a girls only team, to provide regular opposition.

Regional Community Manager, Ben Rose, said that the Ospreys are delighted to be assisting:

“We are all about increasing the number of people involved in rugby, and that includes girls, so we are really pleased to be able to help Morriston RFC with this venture, which will give them the first ever girls only team in Wales at that age-grade.

“Off the back of this, it then gives us a chance to work with other clubs who are looking to do the same, which will then see some regular fixtures being scheduled. Hopefully, this scenario will lead to a position where even more girls and clubs are attracted towards rugby. The more people we have playing in the game the better, whatever their age, sex or ability, as it will help to make the local rugby community stronger than ever.”

Parents of any girls interested in being a part of Morriston’s U11 team should contact Damian Williams on 07773 608 890.
