Tandy reflects on "pleasing performance"

By Ospreys Rugby | 28/01/2012

After watching his young team run in four tries on their way to a deserved victory over the Dragons in Bridgend on Friday evening, Steve Tandy praised the 'positive intent' shown by the Ospreys.

Speaking to the press after the final whistle, he commented:

"I thought we showed a lot of positive intent, particularly with such a young team. We tried to play in tricky conditions, which was good to see. There was a great crowd here, almost 5,000 people, which inspired the young team to try to play some attractive football.

"We probably left a couple of tries out there in fairness, but I thought as a young group it was a pleasing performance that showed the right intent. I think the crowd and players alike really enjoyed the night.

"We scored some good tries but we can’t allow ourselves to get carried away, there were opportunities that we didn’t take, and if we’d kicked our goals it would have made the scoreboard so much more comfortable.

"I thought Stefan had a reasonable game, he hit some good lines and obviously finished off his try really well, but there were a lot of other good individual performances tonight.

"Tom Habberfield is a great rugby player, I thought Ross Jones played really well. Lloyd Peers and Scott Baldwin put in a lot of effort about the field. Obviously we scored those tries but to do that you need a lot of work from your forwards. The tackle contest was a mess tonight, but in fairness, we did try and show a lot of intent to play.

"Northampton brought a big, first choice team down here in October, tonight was a different kind of challenge. Tonight I thought we were dominant whereas against Northampton it was a different story, our defence had to be excellent. All in all, I think this competition has been superb for us and we’ll really see the benefits of it further down the line.

"I said before the game, you look at Rhys Webb, Ashley Beck, Eli Walker, Matthew Morgan, they’ve played a lot of LV= rugby and it helps with the development towards the RaboDirect, Heineken Cup and the national team. We want to find the next Ashley Beck and Rhys Webb among this group now.

"We want to win every game, fans, players and coaching staff alike. Tonight was great for everyone involved. I’m sure it will give us all a lift and we can take that into Worcester next week."
