GAME SENSE SESSION FOR COACHES IN OSPREYLIA

Ospreys Coach Development Officers Tony Thomas and Dan Owens held two coaching seminars for coaches within the Ospreys Region. The theme of the two evenings was 'Game Sense' coaching. The evenings were held at Dunvant RFC and Pyle RFC.

An introductory presentation was made to outline the programme for the evening and to clarify what was meant by 'Game Sense'. This was followed by a practical session in which Dan and Tony demonstrated a number of games which could be used in training sessions. The coaches were encouraged to contribute by suggesting a number of modifications which could be utilised and the technical and tactical benefits which could be derived.

The coaches were then split into groups and asked to devise their own games and to explain the rationale and the benefits of what they had devised. The other groups were then invited to comment and to suggest further improvements. The keen debates which followed reflected the enthusiasm shown by the coaches present.

Leading WRU referee, James Jones, attended the Pyle seminar and led a lively Question and Answer forum.

We are very grateful to both Pyle and Dunvant Rugby Clubs for again hosting these events and in particular to those players that took part. It was most rewarding to obtain feedback from the players who stated that this form of training was both productive and enjoyable. We would also like to thank James for again making himself available for the benefit of all our coaches.

The next seminar in the series will be on the topic of "€˜Fitness and Nutrition' and will be taken by Jason Larkman, Regional Age Grade Conditioning Coach. This will take place at Llandarcy at 7 p.m. on Friday 24th April.
