OSPREYS PLAYER PATHWAY
Ospreys U16 selection takes place after extensive Talent ID and recommendations have been collated from School, District and Club competitions. Local Coaches involved in teams across the Region working in unison with WRU Development Officers work to identify local players with the potential to step up into Regional Age Grade Rugby. The Dewar Shield and Osprey Cup plays a vital role in this process.
This ID process continues throughout the season, and with the competition now divided into two rounds the door always remains open for young players who perform well to come into the Regional environment. The door is always open for those who develop and improve through the season.

Ospreys U18s - Where next for the players?
When players leave the U16 age group, it is essential they continue to build on the foundations put in place in the Ospreys set up. The next step will see players enter the College, schools or club leagues, depending on their educational decisions, and rugby activity will be tailored around this. To support this the colleges (Neath Port Talbot, Gower and Bridgend) in partnership with the Ospreys, will run a summer programme of rugby and conditioning which all players are welcome to attend.
There are also local satellite gyms already in place at SA1, Ystalyfera, Pencoed and Llandarcy which cover strength and conditioning over the summer period. At the end of the current season, each U16 player will receive individual feedback from their Osprey coaches on the positive aspects of their season, and things to improve on moving forward. Parents are welcome to attend this review.
Selection for the U18 squad is finalised through ID of the competitions played at U18 level, be that club, school or college. Players identified through talent ID networks will be monitored through these fixtures and recommendations from local Coaches, Regional Development Officers and Ospreys staff, form selection. With around 100 players coming through U16 level, the aim is to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to progress to the next level. There are numerous examples of players who make selection at a later date who were not identified at an early age. Within the senior squad, players such as Adam Jones, Justin Tipuric and Sam Lewis are examples of this. The door is never closed.
