Glynn in from Quins

By Ospreys Rugby | 03/10/2019

Ben Glynn signs for Ospreys

After announcing the signing of South African scrumhalf, Shaun Venter, earlier this week, Ospreys are delighted to announce another crucial signing.

The 6ft 6in, 19 stone lock Ben Glynn will join the squad from Gallagher Premiership side, Harlequins.

• Ben Glynn played for England U18s and made 99 appearances for Bristol
• At 6ft 6in and 19st, Glynn is an imposing figure, and will bolster an injury hit second row at the Ospreys
• The former Harlequin is capable of playing in both the second and back row

With second row trio Alun Wyn Jones, Adam Beard, and Bradley Davies on international duty, the squad suffered another blow against Ulster when James King went down injured, on top of Will Griffiths picking up an injury during the week. The 28-year old’s timely arrival will add much needed cover in a position that needs bolstering.

The former England U18s lock, who can also play in the back row, enjoyed a prosperous period at Bristol, just one appearance short of one hundred caps for the Bears. Glynn also tallied up over 40 appearances for the Quins and was a popular figure there, having been nominated for the DHL Supporters' Player of the Month shortly after making his debut.

Rugby General Manager Dan Griffiths said of his fifth summer signing: “Ben has played at a top level for a long period of time and offers us an excellent option with three key players away on international duty and two others picking up injuries last week.

“With that in mind, we’re looking forward to seeing Ben in action on Friday at Leinster and hope the fans will join us in welcoming him to the club.”

Head Coach Allen Clarke added: “It's great to secure a player of Ben’s calibre and experience so swiftly. He offers us an immediate option in a position of critical need.

“In the short time he has been with the squad he has fitted in brilliantly and already he has shown the potential he possesses. Undoubtedly it’s been a whirlwind week for him, one which is going to become even more intense come Friday night but one he is really looking forward to."

Glynn will travel to Dublin this weekend to face Leinster having been named on the bench for Clarke’s side, speaking to OspreysTV ahead of travelling he said: “It’s obviously a great set up here and they’ve had some great players come through, and have many still here.

“I got a call on Monday evening, then came across for tin hat Tuesday, full contact training. It’s been a bit whirlwind but I’m really enjoying it and they’re a good bunch of lads here. I can’t wait to get going now.”

Cyhoeddwyd dyfodiad mewnwr o Dde Affrica, Shaun Venter, yn gynharach wythnos yma, ac mae’r Gweilch yn falch iawn cael cyhoeddi chwaraewr arall. Bydd y clo Ben Glynn, sy’n 6 troedfedd a 6 modfedd a 19 stôn, yn ymuno â’r garfan o dîm y Cwins, sy’n chwarae yng nghynghrair Lloegr.

• Chwaraeodd Ben Glynn dros Loegr D18 ac mae wedi gwneud 99 ymddangosiad dros Fryste
• Mae Glynn yn gawr o ddyn, a bydd yn cryfhau ail reng y Gweilch sydd wedi dioddef nifer o anafiadau yn ddiweddar
• Mae’r cyn-Harlequin gallu chwarae yn yr ail reng ac yn y rheng ôl

Tra bod Alun Wyn Jones, Adam Beard, a Bradley Davies yn cynrychioli eu gwlad, dioddefodd y garfan golled arall dros y Sul gyda James King yn ymuno â Will Griffiths ar y restr o anafiadau. Mae dyfodiad Glynn yn un amserol a bydd yn ychwanegu nerth mewn safle sydd ychydig yn fregus dros dro.

Cynrychiolodd Glynn Lloegr D18, ac mae gallu chwarae yn yr ail reng ac yn y rheng ôl. Chwaraeodd 99 gwaith dros Fryste, a thros 40 gwaith dros y Cwins yn Llundain. Mae’n gymeriad poblogaidd yno, a chafodd ei enwebu am Chwaraewr y Mis gan gefnogwyr y Cwins, yn fuan ar ôl gwneud ei ymddangosiad cyntaf.

Roedd gan Dan Griffiths, Rheolwr Cyffredinol Rygbi, hwn i ddweud am gaffaeliad diweddaraf y Gweilch: “Mae Ben wedi treulio cyfnod hir o’i yrfa yn chwarae rygbi o’r safon uchaf ac mae’n cynnig opsiwn ychwanegol tra bod tri chwaraewr allweddol i ffwrdd â Chymru, a dau arall wedi eu hanafu.

“Wrth ystyried hwn, rydym ni’n gyffrous iawn gweld Ben ar y cae nos Wener yn Leinster, a rydym yn gobeithio bydd ein cefnogwyr yn ymuno â ni wrth groesawu Ben i’r clwb.”

Ychwanegodd Prif Hyfforddwr Allen Clarke: “Mae cymwysterau Ben yn amlwg, mae wedi chwarae mewn tîm cryf yn y Gynghrair Gallagher, ac mae’n cynnig nerth corfforol mewn safle sydd wedi ei wanhau oherwydd anafiadau a Chwpan y Byd.

“Yn yr amser byr mae ef wedi bod gyda ni, mae wedi ymdrochi ei hun yn y garfan ac wedi dangos ei ddawn rygbi. Heb os nac oni bai, mae wedi bod yn adeg prysur iddo, ond fydd hi’n prysurach fyth erbyn nos Wener. Ond dwi’n sicr mae’n edrych ymlaen at yr achlysur.”

Bydd Glynn yn teithio i Ddulyn y penwythnos yma i herio Leinster, ar ôl iddo gael ei enwi ar y fainc y penwythnos yma. Yn siarad gyda OspreysTV, dywedodd ef: “Mae’r cyfleusterau yn wych yma ac mae hanes o chwaraewyr ardderchog yma, ac mae llawer ohonyn nhw dal yma.

Cefais alwad nos Lun, ac erbyn bore ddydd Llun roeddwn i yma yn hyfforddi’n galed. Mae wedi bod yn ddi-baid hyd yn hyn, ond dwi’n mwynhau’n fawr iawn ac mae pawb yma wedi rhoi croeso cynnes i mi. Rydw i ar bigau drain eisau mynd amdani, nawr.”
