TACKLE's back and set to be bigger than ever!

By Tiffany Jones | 24/09/2019

OitC’s TACKLE programme is all set to relaunch for the new season after a busy Summer from the team.

Learners from six schools across Ospreylia will gather at the TA centre in Neath on the morning of Wednesday (25th September) for the relaunch of the innovative programme, with 70 students taking part in the event.

St Joseph’s Comprehensive School, Coleg Cymunedol y Dderwen, Ysgol Bryntawe, Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur, Llangawtg Comprehensive School and Maesteg School will all be in attendance, where they will take part in a variety of events all focusing on resilience.

As part of its programme, TACKLE has worked with employers including Sony, Morganstone Ltd, the DVLA, Ospreys Rugby and many others to expose learners to different work sectors, jobs and opportunities out there and how to progress on the career ladder.

Wednesday will see the team joined by the Royal Navy, Big Ideas Wales, the WRU and the TA’s.

The relaunch comes after a hugely successful Summer programme for the team which saw 31 learners start and 100% of those complete the esteemed programme. 43 qualifications were earned, 59 mock interviews conducted, 6 days of work experience gained and 9 guest workshops and visits. As well as their busy 8-week schedule, the learners also assisted on the Ospreys in the Community’s 3-day camp and also completed first aid courses.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Employability officer, Nick White said: “We’re really looking forward to re-launching the TACKLE schools programme tomorrow. After a hugely successful summer programme with over 30 learners we’re excited to be linking back up with St. Joseph’s, Bryntawe, CCYD, Maesteg plus also welcoming Llangatwg & Ystalyfera to the TACKLE schools programme.

This new school year, we’re looking forward to challenge ourselves even more – We’ve engaged with huge numbers over the last 6 months with the schools programme and the summer programme but we’re getting amazing feedback from our participants, schools and local businesses so with the addition of two new schools this term, we’re looking forward to making TACKLE even bigger.”

Past learners on the programme have acknowledged the impact TACKLE has had in shaping their futures and giving them the confidence to face life’s challenges head on. They commented:

“I would say Tackle has made me feel like I could do a lot more, made me see that I could be what I want to be, if I just put enough hard work into it. Nothing just comes to you on a silver plate. You need to go out there and get it.”

“I just feel better in general, I just feel more awake and ready. Because, before I didn’t even want to get out of bed, didn’t want to get on the bus. But, coming to school and having this to look forward to.”
