International Rugby Camps come to Swansea

By Ospreys in the Community | 06/02/2018

This Summer Ospreys in the Community, in association with Swansea University, will host Swansea’s first International Rugby Camp with English tutorial.

The International Rugby Camps will provide an innovative approach with the partnership seeing a top-flight rugby organisation and a global research/teaching University come together to provide an outstanding learning experience for children from across the globe.

The summer camps will see boys and girls aged 12-17 taking part in an excellent full programme providing them with an opportunity to learn how to play rugby the Ospreys way and also improve their English, in a caring, fun, friendly, safe and secure environment.

The programme offers a wide range of opportunities for participants to improve their rugby and English skills, with on field training and English language sessions focusing on sport, day to day situations and general conversation. It has been developed between Ospreys in the Community and the English Language Training School (ELTS) to ensure a fulfilling and robust timetable for the duration of the camp.

The first 2-week camp will run from Sunday 15th July through to Saturday 28th July 2018. Hosted at Swansea University Sports Village, the fantastic venue will provide world-class sports and learning facilities. The rugby programme will be taught by the Ospreys in the Community staff who are all Level 2 and above coaches accredited by the Welsh Rugby Union, the National governing body for rugby in Wales. English tuition will be provided by experienced tutors from Swansea University who will offer informative and interactive lessons relevant to the rugby element of the course.

The programme will also give opportunities for educational visits to Welsh historical landmarks and the Liberty Stadium – the home of the Ospreys – for a look behind the scenes and to learn about the inner workings of a professional rugby team. Evening sessions will be a mix of social events such as a barbeque, swimming session or a movie night.

Welcoming the partnership Paul Whapham, Foundation Manager, Ospreys in the Community said:

“We’re delighted to be launching our International Rugby Camps in association with Swansea University. Our very experienced OitC coaches have worked with young players from around the world on many occasions and have developed a suitable programme that will develop the camp’s attendees existing rugby skills and also teach them new ones.

“As well as their on pitch work, we’ll also be educating them off field, looking at strength and conditioning work with our specialist coaches and post match recovery.

“It’s going to be a very exciting fortnight and we’re really looking forward to welcoming young men and women from all over the world to Swansea.”

Speaking about the development of the camps Gez Watt, Commercial Projects Officer said,

“This is a very exciting partnership between Ospreys in the Community and Swansea University, bringing together expertise from professional sport and higher education to provide world-class experiences to young people whilst showcasing the University, Swansea and Wales to a global audience.

“Working in collaboration with colleagues from Business Development, ELTS and Sport, we have developed a product which is unique in the summer camp market by providing award winning teaching and facilities and professional coaching from the Ospreys into one package.”
