Four teams to compete for OITC Cup

Four leading wheelchair rugby teams will compete in the first ever Ospreys in the Community Cup next month.

  • The LC in Swansea to host a weekend of wheelchair rugby action on 4th and 5th June with free entry
  • Ospreys Wheelchair Rugby, Solent Sharks, RGC and I Dogi from Italy will compete
  • Supporters will get the chance to try wheelchair rugby for themselves and enjoy an exhibition from the new Eyasses team

Ospreys Wheelchair Rugby, Solent Sharks, RGC and I Dogi, a representative side for the Venetian region in Italy, will face off at Swansea’s LC on the first weekend of June.

One of the fastest growing Paralympic sports, wheelchair rugby is exciting and action packed, and members of the public will be handed the opportunity to try the sport for themselves over the course of the weekend.

The festival will commence on Friday 3rd June when it is formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Swansea, with a special ‘come and try’ afternoon for youngsters, including an exhibition from the Eyasses Wheelchair Rugby Team, between 4 and 6pm, before a special corporate challenge and mascot race.

The action gets underway in earnest the following day, with matches taking place on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm. In between the games, families can enjoy activities on site and get to meet Ozzie the Osprey, while there is a special guest appearance on Sunday from Jim Roberts, the only Welshman heading to Rio later this summer with the GB Wheelchair Rugby team.

Paul Whapham, Ospreys in the Community, said:

“We are thrilled to be able to support Ospreys Wheelchair Rugby and assist them with hosting what promises to be an exciting weekend of action. In particular, we are pleased to welcome RGC, Solent and I Dogi to the region, especially in the case of our Italian visitors who hosted the Ospreys to coincide with the PRO12 game against Treviso last year.

“With come and try opportunities, the exhibition from the new Eyasses Wheelchair team, and a visit from Jim Roberts before he heads off with Team GB, as well as the matches themselves, it promises to be a great weekend for everybody involved and we hope to see the local community getting behind the festival.”

Nic Beggs, General Manager at the LC, comments:

“We have a longstanding relationship with Ospreys Rugby and are delighted to be able to host the Ospreys in the Community Cup here at the LC.  Not only does the LC offer a great range of activities for all ages, we also host a number of external clubs, including disability sports such as boccia and wheelchair basketball.  The tournament promises to be an exciting day and entry is free so I’d encourage people to join us at the LC over the course of the weekend, to show their support for these talented athletes.”
