Webb rallies Ospreys for final day showdown

Two try hero Rhys Webb says Ospreys will leave no stones unturned as they battle to defy expectations and secure the final PRO12 spot in next season’s Champions Cup.

Having played catch-up for most of the campaign after a disappointing RWC hindered start to the season, the Ospreys had battled their way back into contention throughout the winter months only to appear to have blown their chances with back to back defeats to Connacht, Leinster and the Scarlets in February and March.

However, this Ospreys team are nothing if not resilient and full of character, and three bonus point wins in succession mean that, if not favourites, the Ospreys go into the final round of fixtures with a fighting chance of top tier European competition against next season.

“We came into this knowing we needed to win and knowing we needed to score four tries” said Webb.

“The boys have been positive the last couple of weeks, we don’t want to be where we are in the league at the moment, but we just want to go out there and express ourselves. The way the boys played today, especially in the second half, it’s all credit to the coaches and the boys for getting that result.”

Asked about the Ospreys’ European prospects, Webb made it clear nobody is ready to throw the towel in ahead of next weekend’s Liberty Stadium finale:

“Look, like I said, we don’t want to be where we are, but we haven’t given up yet. After the Scarlets game we knew we’d pretty much have to win every game with a bonus point, four tries, and we’ve done that the last three games.

“We’ve got one more game next week now and we’ve got to take everything good we did today into that and hopefully results will go our way. We aren’t giving up.

“We’re a positive bunch of boys here, we want to go out and play”

Webb’s delight was obvious after the win at the Principality Stadium as he celebrated with Ospreys supporters, and Webb spoke of his pride at leading his home region in recent weeks.

"I felt very proud at the final whistle because the Blues have been going well and everybody had written us off for this game” he said.

“It was a huge effort by the boys and it keeps it alive for the final week.

"I am not looking towards the Wales tour this summer at all. I am only thinking about the Ospreys. We have one game left and whatever happens will happen.

"I feel in good nick and I'm enjoying my rugby. Captaincy has been a real honour for me. I love it."
