Bridgend District Youth face Cardiff & Vale Youth

Bridgend District Youth face Cardiff and Vale District Youth in the semi-final of the Wynne Lloyd District Youth Cup at Porthcawl tonight (7.15pm) after finishing top of their group.

The Wynne Lloyd District U19 Youth Cup is a National competition which involves 12 districts competing for the chance to become National U19 District Champions.

The initial stages of competition involved 3 Groups of 4 Teams, with all 3 Ospreys Districts in Group 2 this year, the group consisted of Heart of Wales, Swansea and Afan Nedd Districts, and after both Bridgend and Afan Nedd came through their first 2 fixtures with wins, it came down to a winner takes all show-down in the final group fixture, where Bridgend came out on top in an entertaining game where the scoreline of 32-6 did not tell the full story of how close a game it was.

Afan Nedd, after being one of the strongest teams in the competition were left to anxiously wait, with a chance of best Runner-Up, but unfortunately, lost out to Pembrokeshire following their own comprehensive win in Group 1.

The Winner of Monday’s game will play in the Final on Wednesday 4th May at Cardiff Arms Park in the Final against the winner of West Carmarthenshire v Pembrokeshire in the other Semi-Final.

This year, following the completion of the competition, there will also be an opportunity for players that have been involved in the 3 districts in the Ospreys Region, Swansea, Afan Nedd and Bridgend to be selected to play in an U19 East v West Battle at Llandarcy on Sunday 22nd May.

The Wynne Lloyd Cup is an important part of the Ospreys Region Player Pathway, being the last representative rugby, and final step on the pathway, on offer prior to senior rugby. Squads are predominantly made up of 3rd year youth players, thus giving an opportunity for any potential late developers to be identified.
