Gloucester 17 Ospreys 0

By - | 30/03/2009

Gloucester defeated the cup holders in the EDF Energy Cup Semi Final at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon. Despite dominating territory and possession for most of the match the Ospreys were unable to turn pressure into points.

The Ospreys welcomed back many of their key players from Six Nations duty including Captain Ryan Jones and Grand Slam winner Tommy Bowe. Richard Hibbard returned from injury to be selected at hooker while youngster Tom Smith retained his place in the back row to make his 30th Ospreys appearance. Also, a strong bench was in place including the likes of Alun Wyn Jones, Filo Tiatia and Mike Phillips.

The only points of the 1st half came from a Ryan Lamb penalty after just 2 minutes. James Hook then missed a couple of his own penalties before Lamb missed one just before the break.

The 2nd half started like the 1st with Lamb converting a penalty early on to give Gloucester a 6 point lead. He then slotted over another closely followed by a nicely struck drop goal in the 71st minute. The win was sealed when Iain Balshaw intercepted a Mike Phillips pass to run in a try from his own 22.
