KRISTIAN PHILLIPS AND GAVIN HENSON KICK OFF THE LATEST OSPREYS COACHING CLINIC IN KENFIG HILL

On the evening of December 17th, Ospreys Community Department delivered yet another coaching seminar held at Kenfig Hill RFC, with Level 1 and Level 2 Coaches in the Ospreys Region.

Ospreys and Wales stars Gavin Henson and Kristian Phillips, assisted by Celyn Ashton from Treorchy RFC, shared their knowledge and expertise on a bitterly cold evening and demonstrated a wide range of kicking skills to the assembled coaches.

The main focus of the evening was on the kicking key points, specifically, ball handling and placement onto the boot, head and eye movement, body position and angle, 'sweet spot' contact and follow through. Dan Owens, Ospreys Coach Development Officer, encouraged the coaches to identify the key points of each kick which would enable them to provide greater assistance to the kickers in their clubs, and where applicable identify areas of development.

The practical session was followed by a lively Question and Answer session both on kicking and other aspects of the game.

The evening was again sponsored by Worthington's who provided a buffet and complimentary beverages to the coaches present, and we would again like to express our appreciation for their continued support of Ospreys initiatives and of grass roots rugby in Wales as a whole.

Dan Owens said '"The event was another great success and we were delighted with the feedback from the coaches. Kicking is a vital aspect of the game which many coaches feel ill equipped to coach. We are very grateful to Kristian, Celyn and Gavin for their time and expertise. We would also like to thank Kenfig Hill Rugby Club for hosting the event. We would also like to give a special mention to Richard Howell and Lee Rogers who stayed on after training and acted as defenders and ball boys in very unpleasant conditions, so thank you very much boys"

A number of further events will take place and details will shortly appear on this website of events in January. We at the Ospreys are committed to improving the support we provide for coaches so please make an effort to attend future events and encourage your colleagues to join us as well.
